Asus WL-700gE

I’m writing a review for this great piece of … I don’t know exactly which I should call this thing, a wireless router, a NAS, a Web server, a print server, a Firewall, an iTune server, a bit torrent downloader!!!!11one11!?…
In fact, you can call call it whatever you want, but this thing can do all of the above.
The box looks ugly, the web interface is even uglier, but who cares? It works, and that’s all that matters.
I’ve been using it intensively for the past week as my BT downloader. There’s not many settings for this section, no throttle, no control like what you have in any BT software you find in your PC. But I think just feature alone is enough for me to buy it already.

However, you have a choice > OpenWrt! is what you need if you want more control over this device. I’m not brave enough to install the firmware, though, because I still need to return this unit to the company after I’m done reviewing it. And, in fact, the target group I’m writing for is not so keen on modifying things anyway.
While I’m writing this blog, I stumble upon another interesting device. A BT downloader/player direct to your TV. MYKA Pretty interesting.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you on the bittorrent issue. I’ve come to appreciate the features of a good torrent client and removing those features, especially throttling, would ruin it for me.

However, the rest of the features including NAS, are a big bonus. The firewall is a given and the ability to be a file/media server comes with it being a NAS device. Print servers are nothing new, but web serving capabilities definitely make it more interesting. Also, the ability to use OpenWRT is a big plus.

I’m happy with my WRT-54GL w/ DD-WRT as it is. Adding NAS to it would be a big plus…of course, why not just add a dedicated NAS device since everything is already working cool? Self-conflict is the worst…*sigh*
